Engine Tune-Up

Livesey’s Motor Works can tune petrol and diesel engines, and complete engine diagnostics to source and fix problems.

Keep up to date with your car tune up and make your engine easier to start, improve fuel economy, lower emissions and restore lost power.

How often does an engine need a tune up?

Tune-up intervals vary from one vehicle to another. Most older vehicles with non-electronic ignitions should be tuned every 10,000 to 20,000 kms or every year, whichever comes first. Newer cars with electronic ignition and fuel injection systems should be checked every 40,000 kms. Check your owners manual for the recommended tune up intervals, but also consider the type of driving you do or if you tow loads with your vehicle. Your ignition system may need to be tuned more often.

How do you know if your vehicle needs a tune up?

Check your owners manual for recommended time frames, or go by the number of kilometres you drive. Stop-start driving in traffic can mean your car will need servicing more often.

If your car is overdue for a tune-up you may have one of these problems:

  • The car stalls a lot, pay attention to whether the engine stalls when it’s hot or cold or when the air conditioner is on
  • The engine is running roughly when idling or when you accelerate
  • The car gets harder to start.
